    Kokol from Massett
Winter in the Haida Nation: Love, Politics and the Potlatch

    Written by Valen Watson
    Performed by Sally Williams (Pardee)

This play for a solo performer was presented in Vancouver in its earliest phase of development (see resume).

The (LA based) playwright from Toronto had recently returned from living in Masset on the northern tip of Haida Gwaii.

In its last incarnation Valen Watson brought together a production team in Los Angeles and the Hollywood Court Theatre became the venue, richly adorned with Eagle and Raven Button Blankets and tall angles of stretch jersey that transformed into anything from rain forest to laundry on the clothesline.

The (LA) director, Justin Ross came from a background in dance, acting and directing. His credits included A Chorus Line (stage and film), Pippin (Broadway) and his directorial debut ‘Lipsynchia’ that played Off Broadway for close to a year.

Musical composer, Mark Fifer, assembled five musicians who were situated in an open loft above the stage.

Justin tried to arrange a longer run of “the Haida piece” but he wasn’t able to make it work as we all went off in various directions.

    Next Stop: Kirov, Russia

Sally in Kirov performed excerpts from Kokol from Massett for participants of The Theatre for Young Spectators. The Russian troupe was working with a school of thought from one of the current studios at the Moscow Art Theatre. They were also involved with methods of Constantin Stanislavsky.
